Composition
Will uses a unique process when composing for the flute, molding melody, harmony, and rhythm from nothing more than sketches on a page. Using extended techniques and detailed improvisation, Will discovers sounds rarely heard from the flute and creates works that have an opportunity to grow and mature with the artist performing them.
Improvisation
Will has developed a focused, yet visceral improvisational style that emphasizes both technique and expression. Improvisations may last only a few minutes or continue for hours, but each one pushes the boundaries for what is possible on the flute.
Freewill
Freewill is a quintet formed out of the New England Conservatory of Music. This group performs new compositions written by the members as well as the music of Anthony Braxton, Sun Ra, Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy, and other great composers.
Visual Improvisation Collective
Currently, Will is working on a project with the goal of exploring the intersection between visual arts and music. Inspired by the writings of Wassily Kandinsky as well as artworks from Claude Monet, Marc Rothko, Joan Mitchell, Helen Frankenthaler, and other fantastic historical painters, Will has developed a methodology that allows musicians to use visual arts as a catalyst for improvisation. This methodology is explored and executed by the Visual Improvisation Collective (VIC) consisting of pianist Jonathan Paik and drummer Alex Yoo.
